Debut tonight for the lad v Barnsley ... good luck son... COYB

Matthew Pennington is a versatile defender who has been at Everton since the age of 11.

He is equally adaptable playing in central defence and at right-back and was rewarded for the high standard of his performances in 2012/13 by receiving a first cap for England Under-19s in March 2013.

In January 2014 he joined Tranmere Rovers on a month's loan, and in a second temporary spell at Prenton Park his goal was in vain as the Wirral outfit were dramatically relegated to League Two on the final day of the season.

He then impressed on loan at Coventry City in 2014/15, making 25 appearances for the League One outfit, as well as securing the Sky Blues’ Young Player of the Year award.

On 7 July 2015, he signed a new three-year deal to keep him at the Club until the summer of 2018.

thought he was unfortunate last night to getr hooked at half time, stuck having to play off McGeady going forward and with Stones and Jags bottling it in defense didn't give him much chance but at least he seemed to be getting stuck in. he got a few good crosses and decent through balls which McGeady fucked up.

Yeah, I thought he played well and was surprised he got taken off...especially as it meant playing Cleverly at RB.

to me Bryan looked more of a defensive week spot than him, but we have literally no other options at LB.

Thought Cleverly did ok when at right back, maybe it was to do with the fact the he thought he'd be too exposed as Delboy won't offer much cover so went with a bit more experience (not that McGeady offered a fucking thing forward or backwards)

Bryan looked short on match fitness. That workout last night will have done him some good.

thats the worry he clearly needs minutes but 120mins at a fairly hectic pace on his comeback is a bit of a worry given how long he's been out

To me Pennington looked ok going forward, but not clever enough in defense. Promising, but not ready for the first team from what I saw.

Walsall sign Everton's Matthew Pennington on loan

The 21-year-old, who spent part of last season in League One with Coventry City, can play at right-back or in the centre of defence and provides the Saddlers with added cover ahead of the end-of-season run-in.

While at Coventry, Pennington made 25 appearances and won the club’s young player of the year prize.

He signed a new, three-year deal at Everton in the summer and has appeared twice for the Toffees this season in cup competitions

We have loaned the lad out a lot, and although he is still young, he is old enough to have learned the skills he needs, so it looks like Koeman doesn't rate him for the first team. To be fair he did make a few errors when he played for the first team, so maybe they just want him to get over his nerves?
