16: James McCarthy - covers the Earth's surface

Post  Yankthattoffee on Tue 03 Sep 2013, 5:06 pm

Hamilton Academicals say they will use a cash windfall from the sale of Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy to Everton to develop more young talent.
The midfielder became the most expensive Scottish-born player when he was sold by Wigan for more than £13m. And Hamilton are expected to receive a seven-figure sum following a sell-on clause in the 22-year-old's contract.
"It just will allow us to invest in our infrastructure," Accies chairman Les Gray told BBC Scotland.

I haven't taken too much notice of the lad until now. Just watched his first interview. Seems like the opposite to the Nigerian 22! He could be 13!

Although Dunphy, Giles and Brady are somewhat set in there ways and opinions can be repetitive, they're a lot better then the vocal bottom cleaning punditry served up by Sky, the Beeb or ITV. That clip is tame in comparison to some of their "chats". The presenter "Billo" is also a legend puppet master.

Although born and raised in Glasgow, he plays for Ireland. I assume there are some family ties and what not to Ireland hence him picking Ireland over Scotland - anyone know?

The family consider themselves Irish, McGeady is the same.

There's probably a religious/political basis for this.

Thor you could play for the Oirish national team, criteria are very loose, you only need to match one of the following :
Ever owned an Oirish setter ?
Got a postcard from the old country ?
Own one of those white thick woolen sweaters and/or caps ?
Visited the Emerald Isle and kissed the Blarney Stone ?
Or love gallons of

In fairness Ireland take advantage of the 'grandparent' rule in the same way European teams like France and Belgium take advantage of their colonial past and large influx of immigrants from Africa i.e Zidane, Thuram etc. There is a huge Ireland immigrant population abroad, far more that live in Ireland so that is why you get players like McCarthy & McGeady and other in the past, especially under the Charlton years that see themselves as essentially Irish.

Him. I welcomed him to Everton.

I think he was pissed off after the match.

Ireland were a joke last night. Absolutely disgusted that I paid good money to watch that.

Sweden showed they could get the ball down when they need to, although Ireland made it easy for them.
