Yeah, my mate asked if I fancied Young Boys, so I told him to fuck off and now he's going to the match on his own.

Re: Young Boys v Everton

Everton boss Roberto Martinez believes his side will cope with the artificial pitch they will play on in their Europa League last-32 tie at Young Boys.

Everton have trained on a similar surface used by Widnes Vikings ahead of the first leg in Switzerland.

Martinez said: "We have done our preparation right. We have been working on that sort of surface and I feel we are ready.

"It is not an excuse or a reason for us not to be able to compete in the game."

Young Boys have won all five of their home ties in the Europa League this season and are currently second in the Swiss Super League behind defending champions Basel.

Everton, who topped their qualifying group in the competition but who have won just one of their last 11 games, travelled without eight players, including Leighton Baines and Aiden McGeady, who both have knee injuries.

Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar and Arouna Kone were not included after playing for the club's under-21s on Monday night as they work back towards full fitness, while Tony Hibbert is injured and Sylvain Distin was not selected.

Recent loan signing Aaron Lennon is cup-tied after playing for Tottenham earlier in the competition but on-loan Chelsea winger Christian Atsu could make his first appearance since helping Ghana reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

I didn't realise YB had an artificial pitch. I'm sure there's a joke about 'grass on the wicket' somewhere in there.

Somehow I can't get my head around rugby on a plastic pitch. Is there any level of cushioning?

Re: Young Boys v Everton

Post  Super on Thu 19 Feb 2015, 9:12 am

Roberto Martinez has turned to Harry Redknapp to ensure Everton do not slip up on a plastic pitch tonight. The Everton manager spoke to the former Tottenham and QPR boss for advice on how to deal with playing on Young Boys' controversial artificial surface. Redknapp's Spurs played at Stade De Suisse in a Champions League qualifier in 2010 and he was furious after the 3-2 defeat because he had to leave out a number of top stars fearing they would get injured. That pitch was replaced with a supposedly better surface last summer. But Martinez has left Arouna Kone out of this evening's Europa League last-32 tie despite being fully fit because he only recently returned from a serious knee problem.

The Toffees boss reckons the rest of his side are ready to deal with the plastic pitch after Redknapp's advice. They have also trained on Super League side Widnes Vikings' artificial surface this week in preparation.

"I had that conversation with Harry after the game we had against QPR,' said Martinez. "We used the opportunity to ask how he felt about it and how it affected the game. "At that time it was a different surface, they went to a grass pitch after that and returned to a fourth generation pitch. "We've been able to train all week on a similar surface so we're quite aware of what we're going to see. "If you're not prepared the players can be shocked a bit, not sure about what footwear to wear, about what will happen with the bounce of the ball. "But we are prepared so it shouldn't be a shock. We are ready to perform and no excuse not to be able to compete in the game."

However, Martinez said that Young Boys - who have won their last seven European games at home - do have an advantage.

He added: "The reality is that it's a different surface and the home team are used to playing on it, so that should give them a bit of an advantage. "I'm a romantic. I like to play the game on natural grass and I do feel it's a bit different. "The artificial grasses are not what they used to be. Even the appearance looks like normal grass. "I would prefer natural grass but it's not up to me make that call."

EVERTON (4-2-3-1): Howard; Coleman, Stones, Jagielka, Oviedo; McCarthy, Barry; Mirallas, Naismith, Barkley; Lukaku.

The USA Sevens last weekend was played at UNLV on 'turf', as they call it. Lots of slipping and sliding but I didn't see any carpet burns...
