Everton v Middlesbrough

Post  The President on Wed 14 Sep 2016, 10:34 pm

We continue our impressive start to the season with a Saturday Evening KO against one of the new boys.

3-0 again please (Baines, Lukaku, Kone)

Making it 13 points out of possible 15 (continue like this and we just might dare to hope)

Stroll in the park, 5-0 with back to back hat-tricks for Luka, and a goal apiece for Mirallas and Geri.

Ain't no stopping us now.

Everton news conference - Everton v Middlesbrough (Sat, 17:30 BST)

Ronald Koeman gave some team news for Saturday. He said new signing Enner Valencia could make his debut against Boro, while Darren Gibson, James McCarthy and other long-term absentees won't be available.

Ronald Koeman says Gareth Barry, 35, will make his 600th Premier League appearance against Middlesbrough. "It is amazing, 19 seasons in a row, that is fantastic," Koeman said.

Ronald Koeman on England midfielder Ross Barkley, who was substituted at half-time during Everton's 3-0 win at Sunderland on Monday. "There was a reason to take Ross Barkley off at half-time, he didn't play well lost too many balls, players of that quality can't lose those kind of balls. I had a talk with Ross, he needs to improve and we will see at the weekend. "He understands, we showed him the clips and there is no escape. "You look to his qualities he needs to be the key player between defenders and strikers, in a position to create and defensively be part of a team - in all aspects he can and needs to improve."

Everton manager Ronald Koeman says the Champions League is not a "realistic" target for the club. But he says they can "fight for Europe". The Toffees are third in the Premier League table with a draw and three wins from their opening four games.

Hopefully Ross will react to this criticism in a positive manner and not go into a sulk.

Quite right too - when results go badly, as they inevitably do for everyone, the amount of bullshit the manager talks gets scrutinised. He's right about Barkley too - there was a period of about 60 seconds where he had about three attempts to clear the play the ball to safety from our own penalty area, and every time his 'clearance' was intercepted and Sunderland were back in a threatening position. It was embarrassingly bad.

Lawro's thoughts (for what they are worth)

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has competition for places and is not afraid to make big decisions, like taking Ross Barkley off at half-time at Sunderland on Monday.
Romelu Lukaku is back among the goals and Idrissa Gueye looks a steal in midfield too - everything is going well for them.
Middlesbrough have still made a solid start to the season despite seeing their unbeaten run ended by Crystal Palace last week, but it is hard to see them getting anything at Goodison Park.
Lawro's prediction: 2-0

Koeman was savage about Ross in that interview. Not ranting and raving, but really harsh like a school report just before you sit your GCSEs. I dunno, I can't see Barkley improving enough to keep his place in a Koeman team, especially if he's still building a squad and makes more signings in January. Maybe Ross needs to rethink his game totally, become a different kind of player.

Gone by this time next year? Could he end up being the brightest of the long list of Everton stars who ended up burning out before they could really shine in the game?

Really shining to Foeman. The Daily Telegraph article with Gareth Barry is as equally revealing. If anything the RK attitude shows why he played at the very highest levels and knows what it takes to get there and importantly will not let poor player attitude or technique stop him. I think if Ross is smart he will understand that RK does want the best for him (if anyone is put out I do hope its Ross' agent and that Ross realises he needs realism not smoke being blown up his ass!)

Either way getting to feel a bit more positive each day...

A lot of pressure on Ross. As soon as he gives the ball away a couple of times, the fans will be on him. Massive game for the lad.

True. If he was dropped it would having been crushing for him but now the spotlight is even more on him, especially if it starts badly for him. Just hope the fans give him some breathing space. He plays in one of the most congested areas of the pitch and trying to play good passes come with more risks. A real defining moment for him. Let's hope he can learn from the week he has had.

COYBS!

Koeman obviously sees Ross is doing the right things in training. K. not being afraid to change things is a massive help as it persuades eth players that most subs are tactical.
