Everton boss Ronald Koeman:

"The points are really welcome because you don't know what to expect on the first day. It wasn't the performance we like. The team looked nervous on the ball - that's the reason I changed the system at half-time. We need to improve a lot."

On Wayne Rooney scoring the winner:

"Wayne showed he is still one of the best in his position. He was very comfortable on the ball, made good decisions and scored a great goal."

thought Rooney was very good, second half in particular, but his movement for his goal was a thing of beauty.

think Koeman is still playing with combinations. Klaasen having to man-mark a lot today and I don't think that's his skill set. Martina might grow on me. Keane and Pickford are superb signings.

Met and had a decent chat with Erwin Koeman in a Liverpool restaurant on Saturday night.... I asked him did we have the right mix to play a true back 3 with proper wingback and I got a rueful smile. He did mention that the "boss" was not happy at half time and made the changes...

Job done as far as I'm concerned. If we can pick up a few points from the run of death we have coming up we'll be in for a decent season I reckon.

The players have a lot of talent, they just need to learn be a team.

Re: Everton V Stoke City

Post  hairy cataract on Sun 13 Aug 2017, 10:22 pm

Only saw the last 60 minutes, been away for the weekend, but I thought Rooney was another class. We would have drawn that game last season, and in fact for the past few seasons, because we haven't had a player who could start and finish a move like that for years. He may be getting on, but he's still a long way ahead of most players in the world.

I thought Pickford was superb too, as was Gana, particularly in the second half. Can't understand Koeman's first half tactics and starting line up, but at least he put it right. DCL was very good too. Klaassen shouldn't start for us til he gets used to the PL. Maybe bring him on as first sub after 60 mins when it looks like it might work, but he's absolutely miles behind Davies as a starter for me.

Great win after a dire first half.
